Keung Keung

Keung Keung had had a serious injury on his head while he was on the way to school in 2017. When he was sent to hospital, the doctors told his parents that it was not optimistic. The parents almost broke down but they never gave up. Keung Keung has been in a coma for three months. Fortunately, he regained consciousness after two brain surgeries and a social worker referred him to Ronald McDonald House Charities® Hong Kong (RMHC Hong Kong).

Keung Keung faces difficulties in dysphagia, speech and mobility and needs to receive treatment from Prince of Wales Hospital every day. If he lives at home, he has to take more than an hour to go to hospital. As he grows and becomes heavier, his mom finds it hard to take care of him. Staying at RMHC Hong Kong, it takes only about 5 minutes to the hospital. The family can receive support when they are back at “Home”. Besides interest classes, parents in the House support each other. The most important of all is that they can stay close with their families every day.

Keung Keung was discharged from our “Home” but he and his family are still our beloved “family members”. He is making good progress in his recovery and joins our activities from time to time. Keeping families close and near the care they need is what we always do.
Angus Au

Angus and his mom stayed in Ronald McDonald House ® in 2001. They found that it was not only a temporary home, but also a house that love built. After recovery, Angus and Mrs. Au joined our volunteer team. At first, Mrs. Au came every Saturday to support housekeeping work while Angus played with the sick children and acted as an Art teacher. They also shared their own experience with the sick children and their families to alleviate their pressure.

In recent years, Angus and Mrs. Au assisted our major fundraising events such as Raffle Ticket Sales, Gala Dinner and Open Day. They want to share love with others through voluntary works. They are not only our long-term volunteers, but also our family members!
Him-Him

Him-Him was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when he was three. Him-Him's mother, was very frightened and worried. To relieve her pressure, Him-Him’s grandmother took care of Him-Him and brought him to hospital for medical treatment. Him-Him lived in Tuen Mun. Before moving to Ronald McDonald House ® (RMH), it was a long and tiring trip for them to travel to the hospital in Shatin. Luckily, the family could move into the "home" within walking distance to the hospital. At RMH, Him-Him made lots of new friends and always played his beloved toy cars with other children. He also enjoyed the house activities like parties, art classes and playing with the volunteers. Him-Him’s grandmother left Him-Him to his parents when they finished work. It was very important for Him-Him to stay close to his parents at that time. RMH really was our "home-away-from-home". It enabled an elderly person like Him-Him’s grandmother to be able to take care of the sick grandson. Without RMH, the family had no idea how they could manage the difficult time. It also put the mind of Him-him’s mother at ease knowing that the family could stay close to each other, and the hospital was right across the road.

Wah Wah was diagnosed with gastrointestinal hemangioma of tract when she was 5 months old. When Wah Wah was in the hospital for the first two months, her mom was anxious and worried and her dad could not go to work. The couple had to shuttle between their Tai Po home and the hospital every single day. Wah Wah’s sister, Kwan Kwan was nine years old by then. She felt more like an orphan as her parents’ attention was all on Wah Wah. With the existence of the Ronald McDonald House (RMH), their family life and relationship turned normal and better.

My son Ho Hin was diagnosed with medulloblastoma when he wasn't even one year old. I needed to start a long journey of treatment with him on my own because at that time my husband was working in the Mainland. Thankfully a social worker concerned our case and referred us to move into the Ronald McDonald Charities House®. Afterwards, my son suffered from another illness, and we moved into the House again.

Life is full of adversity. My two lovely daughters suffered from Thalassemia, which made me live in hardship for ten years in order to take care of them. Fortunately, we got chances to accommodate at the Ronald McDonald House®. It not only helped me take care of my daughters but also giving me a chance to talk to its staff members and volunteers when I was depressed and doing physical exercise to relax. Luckily, the pair eventually recovered.
